Over a decade ago electronic mobility scooters and motorized wheelchairs designed for both indoor and outdoor use were being purchased using Medicare subsidies. Unfortunately, there were some scooter sellers that abused this subsidy. Over a four-year period Medicare spending for motorized wheelchairs suddenly skyrocketed. Medicare auditors reacted by taking a close look at these expenditures. The result was a very strict interpretation of the Medicare guidelines that had been loosely interpreted before.
Medicare guidelines only indicate coverage for indoor use powered vehicles, for qualified patients who have certain physical conditions. Powered vehicles such as Stars N Stripes scooters, which are designed for the more rigorous demands of outdoor use (although of course they can also be used indoors!), are no longer covered at all.
